EV manufacturer spotlight: Polestar

Polestar is a Swedish automotive brand and manufacturer. Polestar stands out in the market for its unique blend of Scandinavian minimalistic design, advanced technology, and a strong commitment to sustainability. As a subsidiary of Volvo Car Group and Geely, a Chinese multinational company, Polestar is at the forefront of the electric vehicle (EV) revolution. The brand focuses on producing high-performing, environmentally friendly electric cars, making it a top choice for those who value style and sustainability.

Polestar is committed to sustainability and transparency in its operations. It publishes detailed Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for its vehicles to provide consumers with information about the environmental impact of their car throughout its life cycle.

The brand also aims to produce a truly climate-neutral car by 2030 through its Polestar 0 project, which focuses on eliminating emissions from the production process entirely.

The history of Polestar

Polestar was established in 1996 as a performance tuning company for Volvo cars. It has since evolved into a dedicated EV manufacturer, producing high-performance electric vehicles focusing on design, innovation, and sustainability.

Who makes Polestar cars?

Polestar cars are manufactured by Polestar, a joint venture between Volvo Car Group and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (Geely). Volvo contributes engineering, safety technologies, and design, whilst Geely provides significant financial backing, manufacturing infrastructure, and access to the Chinese market.

The design and engineering of Polestar vehicles take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, where Polestar's headquarters is located. This location is a hub for the brand's design, R&D, and overall strategic direction, maintaining its Scandinavian design and innovation-driven approach.

Polestar electric vehicle ranges

Polestar 2: The Polestar 2 is a compact luxury electric hatchback that has been in production since 2020. It is the manufacturer’s first all-electric fastback and features a modern design, an advanced infotainment system, and a substantial driving range of 250 miles (real world). With a top speed of 127mph, going 0-62mph in 4.7 sec, a 405L boot, and five seats, the Polestar 2 combines performance and practicality.

Polestar 3: The Polestar 3 is a mid-size luxury electric SUV. Expanding on its predecessors, this SUV boasts 351 Wh/mi, a 305mi (real world) range, and a top speed of 130mph. Thanks to its front aero wing attaching the air to the bonnet, increasing aerodynamic efficiency, the vehicle combines the expected size and ample space of an SUV with speed. Polestar dubbed it “an SUV that drives like a sports car.”

Polestar 4: The Polestar 4 is a compact luxury electric crossover SUV with a coupe-like body. This half-SUV, half-coupe has a 305-mile range (real world), a top speed of 112mph, and an efficiency of 308 Wh/mi.
