What is Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology?

With V2G your car acts as a mobile battery. Soaking up power when there’s less demand for energy, and exporting it back to the grid, to power your home and others’, when there’s more demand (like when everyone puts the kettle on when they get home from work).

A typical V2G driver could save £620 compared to charging their car at home on a standard variable tariff.

Help usher in Britain’s green future

EVs aren’t just the greenest way to drive. They have huge potential to support a sustainable energy system by charging up when the wind blows. With Vehicle-to-Grid, they make even more of a difference: exporting power back at busy times, reducing the need for fossil fuels.

It’s incredible that we have more and more portable batteries on our driveways, and the possibilities are growing all the time. You can pull up a front-row seat in shaping the future of our grid with the Power Pack Bundle.

How the Octopus Power Pack tariff works

Automated charging, both ways

Octopus Power Pack schedules your V2G charging and exporting. Plug your car in and tell Octopus how much charge you need, and by when. The tariff will automatically schedule your car to charge when energy is greenest, and then export back to the grid when it needs help.

Works alongside your existing tariff

Power Pack is an add-on tariff that sits alongside your usual home energy tariff. You'll continue paying for your home energy use, but your EV charging will be free. It works with most Octopus Energy tariffs, but not Tracker, Agile (import or export), or Intelligent Octopus tariffs.

How do I get the Power Pack Bundle?

  1. Get your quote

Choose your lease length and how many miles you’ll drive (charging included up to 12,000 miles/year).

  2. Check you're eligible

We'll need some details to check you fit the bill, this includes a soft credit check.

  3. Apply for export license

You need a license to export energy to the grid (aka G99). We'll apply for you - it can take up to 12 weeks.

  4. Home charger survey

At the same time we'll check you can have the charger installed and then book you in once your G99 is approved.

  5. Formal credit check

We'll do a hard credit check, using the same information you provided at the start of the process.

  6. Sign your car lease contract

Get your contract signed and make your upfront payment.

  7. Your Dolphin is delivered!

It’s signed, sealed and now delivered. Enjoy all the benefits of the Power Pack Bundle.

  8. Switch energy tariff

We'll switch your home energy to Octopus Energy's Power Pack tariff so you can get your free charging.

Who can get it?

You'll need to:

  • Be an Octopus Energy customer (or be willing to switch)
  • Be able to have a V2G charger installed (there are a few tech requirements)
  • Have a smart meter
  • Have a charging schedule that fits.

Frequently asked questions

To be eligible for the Power Pack Bundle from BYD, Octopus and Zaptec you'll need:

  • Off street parking and the ability to charge your EV at home
  • To be over the age of 18 and have a full driving licence
  • No plans to move home in the next 6 months
  • To be a customer of Octopus Energy, (or be willing to become one!)
  • A working half-hourly smart meter
  • To want to lease (rather than own) an electric vehicle
  • To drive less than 12,000 miles a year
  • Single phase power at your property (rather than three-phase)
  • A schedule that fits. You'll need to be able to plug in for 12 hours a day for 20 days per month. We're not fussed if you occasionally miss these targets, but if it's a regular occurrence you may need to hop off the Power Pack tariff. You can see the full T&Cs of the tariff here.

This product also requires you to have a G99 license (permission from your Distribution Network Operator to export power to the grid). The process for obtaining this permission can take up to 12 weeks and results in a license to export an amount of energy to the grid. Not all customers will be successful, based on local grid stability or capacity, or the safety of your home system. In these cases you will not be able to take a V2G enabled BYD Dolphin but our EV specialists will be able to guide you through your options and find a suitable car for you, should you still want to lease an EV through Octopus EV.

An average V2G driver could save up to £620 per year compared to charging at home on a standard variable tariff.

A G99 is an application process for any integrated microgeneration and storage units that are a generation over 16A (3.68kW). It proves that the connection complies with Engineering Recommendation G99, published by the Electricity Networks Association. It can take anywhere from 10 up to 45 working days for an application to be processed and approved. We'll gather the information from you and get in touch with your local distribution network operator (DNO) to apply. If approved, you'll be able to go ahead with the Power Pack Bundle.

Yes, to benefit from the V2G tariff you'll need to be an Octopus Energy customer. You get free home EV charging with Octopus Energy's Power Pack tariff and this works alongside another Octopus tariff for the rest of your home energy.

Don't worry if you aren't an Octopus Energy customer yet, you just need to switch. Remember, you'll also need to have a smart meter, or be able to have one installed.

Yes, the free charging is capped at the contracted miles within your lease, up to a maximum of 12,000 miles per year.

Any required charging above your contracted lease mileage will be billed at Intelligent Octopus Go off-peak rate with an assumed charging efficiency of 3 miles per kWh. Any battery cycling for the grid's benefit will not be included in the extra charge calculation.

Charger installation includes:

  • A Zaptec Pro charger, as well as all the necessary hardware to charge your EV and send electrons back to the grid
  • Up to 10m of cable
  • All electrical components and connections
  • Mounting the charger to brick or plaster
  • Clipping cables to a wall along window/door frames
  • Electrical testing

A standard installation is included in your price. But if the installation is more complex and our engineers will need to spend more time at your home, it’ll cost a bit more. We'll let you know whether this is the case before it's installed, and bill you directly for the additional cost.

At the moment the Power Pack Bundle is only available on the BYD Dolphin. That includes the car lease, up to 12,000 miles free charging per year, a compatible charger and standard installation.

24, 36 or 48 months.

No, insurance isn't included. You will need to get your own car insurance.

Yes servicing, maintenance and repairs are included in your lease to help keep your car in top condition.

No, we've designed the Power Pack Bundle in partnership with BYD and the way we manage the charging cycles means your vehicle warranty coverage isn't affected.

Most of Octopus Energy's tariffs are compatible with the Octopus Energy Power Pack tariff. However, given the behind the scenes complexity, some smart tariffs won’t be. If you’re on Agile or Tracker for import or on any of Octopus's Intelligent Octopus tariffs, you’ll need to switch to another Octopus Energy home energy tariff first before joining Octopus Power Pack.

You will receive a monthly bill as usual. It’ll include your entire electricity usage (including EV charging) charged at your home unit rate, and we will credit back the amount you paid for your EV charging, so that your EV charging is always free. We’ll calculate this based on the measurements from your EV.

Once you've signed up, you'll be able to set a minimum state-of-charge in the app so that we’ll never go below this level. This level must be set at no higher than 30% so that we can still discharge from your vehicle to support the grid when it’s at its dirtiest.

It can take 2-4 months once you've passed the soft credit check. This is because we need to get your G99 application sorted which can take up to 12 weeks.

Octopus Energy assesses your charging miles based on the kWh of electricity used by the car, measured by the car itself. The included kWh are calculated by assuming an efficiency of 3 miles/kWh.

You won't be able to have another EV charger at home, but we can replace your existing charger with a Zaptec Pro charger. If you have another EV, you can use the Zaptec Pro to charge it normally but you'll only get the V2G benefit from your BYD Dolphin.

You can use the “bump charge” button, which will start a charge immediately. If you bump charge, you won't get any credit for that charge session and it will be charged at your standard tariff rate.
