How does salary sacrifice work?

An electric car salary sacrifice scheme is a way for your employees to get an EV as an employee benefit and save on tax.

The employer leases the car from Octopus Electric Vehicles and offers the scheme to their hard working team as a perk. The employee pays for the car with a portion of their salary before taxes, saving money on tax and getting a brand new EV in return.

And we include everything that they need to hit the road in their shiny new electric car.

What is salary sacrifice?

Salary sacrifice is an employee benefits scheme that allows you to pay for a car out of your gross monthly pay. Because this payment comes out of your pay before any tax, it reduces your salary and in turn lowers your income tax and national insurance payments too.

Money that you'd normally never see (because it goes straight out of your pay to HRMC) goes directly towards paying for your car. This makes it a very cost-effective way to lease an electric vehicle and allows you to save up to 40% on the cost of an electric car.

How does my business sign up to the salary sacrifice scheme?

Setting up on the scheme is easy. Use our quote tool to see what we can offer you and your team. Once you've inputted your company details we'll give you a call to get you set up.

Does salary sacrifice affect tax returns?

When you agree to a salary sacrifice scheme, you agree to reduce your earnings (that's what you pay tax on) in exchange for something else. Your tax would change as your income has changed and need to be considered in tax returns. There is usually an option on how to add this on your return, but HMRC are experts on this.

Does salary sacrifice reduce net income?

Yes, you give up part of your gross income to pay for the car. This means your net pay will go down by the amount you pay for the car, minus your tax savings.

By essentially giving up a portion of your salary, the amount you get paid is reduced – which decreases the amount of income tax and National Insurance you pay.
