EVs vs Hybrids: Navigating the Road to a More Sustainable Future

There’s no denying the huge shift that’s happening in the world of cars, so maybe you’re thinking about making the switch from a fossil-fuelled car to something more environmentally friendly.

EVs and Hybrids will be the only new cars available on the market after 2035, but which one’s the best? Not just for your wallets, but for the planet too.

What’s the difference between an EV and Hybrids?

Hybrids and EVs are often put on the same pedestal. And understanding the differences between them all can be confusing. So, we’ve broken it down for you below.

Charging in an EV vs Hybrid

One reason for people picking hybrids over EVs, is the fear of range. But those days are behind us. Today, most new EVs have a range of more than 200 miles, some even soaring past the 300 mile mark. However, plug-in hybrids have a much smaller battery so can only go around 20-30 miles before having to rely on their petrol or diesel engine.

Are Hybrids bad? And why should I pick an EV over a hybrid?

Hybrids aren’t necessarily bad. Compared to a fossil-fueled car, they’re the better option. But compared to an EV, well, that’s a different story. So, why should you pick an EV over a hybrid?

1. EVs are cheaper to run

EVs are cheaper to run than hybrids, for many reasons.

  • Per mile, electricity is around 90% cheaper than petrol or diesel
  • You don’t have to pay any congestion, ULEZ, or LEZ charges when you have an EV.
  • Most EVs don’t have to pay road tax

Not only are they cheaper to run, but you can also get some wicked benefits when buying or leasing an EV.

2. Maintenance costs are lower for an EV than for a hybrid

While both EVs and Hybrids are known for their efficiency, it’s EVs that're not only more enviro-friendly, but also a more cost-effective option for maintenance.

EV maintenance costs are usually lower because:

  • There are fewer moving parts
  • There’s no engine maintenance
  • EVs require fewer fluids and filters

3. You can drive an EV with an automatic driving license

Pretty much anyone with a driver's license can drive an EV as they’re all automatic. This means that anyone with an automatic license won’t feel left out and can still get top of the range cars, whilst saving the planet.

4. EVs are better for the planet than Hybrids

Both EVs and Hybrids are undoubtedly more eco-friendly than fuel-powered cars, EVs tend to take the lead in terms of their positive contribution to the planet.

EVs are better for the planet than Hybrids because:

  • EVs have zero tailpipe emissions, so they produce zero direct emissions of harmful pollutants and don’t reduce air quality.
  • Energy efficiency in EVs is higher, which helps to lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy production.
  • EVs are adaptable and capable of future-proofing. As the grid becomes cleaner and more renewable energy sources are integrated, the environmental benefits of EVs grow.

The takeaway

Although hybrids may have seemed like they’ve paved the way for EVs, they’ve also slowed the uptake of EVs. Though often thought of as eco-friendly, hybrids are nowhere near as eco-friendly or clean as an EV - which are also more practical, and have way cooler tech.
