What to do in a road traffic accident

Worrying about what to do in a road traffic accident?

Finding yourself involved in a traffic accident can be a stressful experience. But it's crucial to remain calm and focus on the safety of everyone involved. Here’s some guidance on how to handle this situation.

Prioritise safety

  1. Take a moment to collect yourself and breathe. If possible, move to a safe location behind a crash barrier or near a tree. Your safety is of utmost importance
  2. Take a seat and gather your thoughts. By remaining composed, you can make more rational decisions

Get emergency assistance

  • Dial 999 if:
    • Anyone involved is injured or needs immediate medical attention
    • The accident is blocking traffic or poses a danger to others
  • Don’t call 999 if:
    • Everyone is safe, and the vehicles involved aren’t obstructing traffic
    • The vehicles are roadworthy. In this case, move them to a safe location

Assess the situation

  • If everyone is off the road, safe, and medically okay:
    • Avoid admitting liability
    • Avoid making promises to pay for damages
  • If there are injuries or concerns:
    • Call emergency services immediately by dialling 999
    • Stay calm and give the necessary information when asked
  • Important information to gather includes:
    • Names of all parties involved
    • Name and phone number of the other driver and their insurer
    • Make, model, and colour of the other driver's car
    • Number plates of all vehicles involved

Document what’s happened

Take photos of:

  • The damage to your own vehicle and any third-party vehicles involved
  • The junction or location where the accident occurred, if possible
  • Note the well-being of everyone involved and make a list of individuals present. Mention if everyone appears to be okay
