How much range do electric cars have?

TL;DR

Most modern electric cars do somewhere between 200 and 400 miles of real-world range on a full charge, and the average is now almost 300 miles. But do you actually need 300 miles of range? Most people don’t. 

The average UK car only covers around 7,100 miles a year, roughly 19 miles a day. So for most people, one charge lasts several days. The short answer? You almost certainly need less range than you think.

Range is the thing that most people question when going electric. 53% of drivers told us they were worried about how far an EV can go, when we asked 2,074 UK drivers via YouGov how they felt about electric cars in June 2026. That put range worries ahead of concerns about battery safety and longevity (45%) and whether they’d find a charger (44%). 

EV range is a fair concern. Nobody wants to be stranded on the hard shoulder doing sums. So let’s answer it properly: how far electric cars actually go, and how much range you really need. The answer is probably less than you’d guess.

How far can an electric car go on one charge?

First up, what do we mean by range? Electric car range is simply how many miles your car can drive on a full battery. It’s the EV version of how many miles a full tank gets you in a petrol car - or miles per gallon (MPG). Side note: we’ve come up with the EV equivalent of MPG, read more about it here.

You’ll usually see two numbers quoted for an EV’s range. One is the official lab figure. The other is real-world range, and we think that’s the one that matters because it tells you how many miles you’re likely to get out of your car when you’re actually driving it. 

Real world range is worked out by driving in more ‘real’ conditions, like up hills, in the winter when your battery needs warming up to get going. As the name suggests, it’s more realistic. Everything in this guide uses real-world range, because that’s what you’re more likely get on a wet Tuesday in February.

So what’s a typical EV range? The average range of electric cars is now almost 300 miles, and most modern EVs comfortably clear 200 miles. Any car with a range above 200 miles “would easily fit into most people’s lifestyle. The newest models go well beyond 400.

Chasing a 300 mile range electric car in particular? You’re spoilt for choice. Plenty of mainstream models now clear 300 real-world miles without a flagship price tag, so you don’t have to stretch to the top of the table to get there. The best range electric car for you is the one that fits into how much you typically drive each week, not the one with the biggest number.

How many miles does an EV need?

Here’s the bit that tends to settle the nerves. How many miles does an EV need? Far fewer than most people assume.

The average car in England covered around 7,100 miles in 2024, according to the Department for Transport’s National Travel Survey. That works out at roughly 137 miles a week, or about 19 miles a day. 

Put that next to an EV with 250 or 300 miles of real-world range and the maths gets reassuring fast. The average driver could go the best part of a week between charges. Even a modest electric car would cover your whole week with plenty of wiggle room.

It helps to remember how we actually drive, too. Across all types of travel, people in England made around 922 trips and covered 6,082 miles in 2024, with cars accounting for most of that distance. The bulk of those journeys are short, local hops. The school run, the supermarket, the commute. The big cross-country drives we picture when we need to think more about range are the exception, not the everyday.

And if you can charge at home, you start every morning with a full battery. No fortnightly trudge to the petrol station. So the question “how much range do I need in an EV?” tends to answer itself once you look at your own regular driving habits. For most people, it’s a lot less than the range EVs actually offer.

One more thing worth knowing: some of the best mileage EVs, the ones that squeeze the most miles from every charge, will happily beat their quoted range if you drive gently. Which brings us neatly to the next bit.

How to get the most range out of your EV

Whatever car you pick, a few easy habits stretch your electric car range further and turn a good EV into the best mileage electric car it can be. Think of them as ‘free’ extra miles.

  • Ease off the accelerator. Smooth, steady driving adds noticeably to your range. Hard acceleration and sharp braking drain it faster.
  • Watch your motorway speed. Wind resistance climbs quickly above 60mph, so a slightly gentler cruise stretches the miles.
  • Lean on regenerative braking. It tops the battery back up as you slow down, and it’s brilliant in stop-start town driving.
  • Precondition while plugged in. Warm up (or cool down) the cabin before you set off while the car’s still on charge, so you’re not spending battery on it.
  • Keep your tyres properly inflated. Under-inflated tyres quietly cost you range. A quick monthly check sorts it.
  • Expect a bit less in winter. Cold weather cuts range, so plan longer trips with a little more headroom. It bounces back when things warm up.

None of this needs to be a chore. Do a couple and you’ll notice the difference.

So, do you really need the longest-range EV?

Probably not. For most drivers, a mid-range EV does everything they need for less money than a flagship. The longest range electric cars earn their keep if you regularly rack up big motorway miles. For everyone else, matching the car to how you actually drive is the smart move.

That’s where leasing comes in handy. Most people need less range than they think. Leasing lets you act on that without a big gamble if you’re switching to electric for the first time. There’s no large upfront purchase, just a fixed monthly cost and a car matched to your real driving.

It also means you’re behind the wheel during the car’s best years. A common worry is a battery slowly losing range over time, or the car losing value (the same battery-longevity worry 45% of drivers told us about in the YouGov survey). On a lease you run the EV while its real-world range is at its strongest, then move on when your term’s up.

And if your driving does change and you find you want more range later, the option’s there to step into a newer model at the end of your lease, rather than being tied to today’s car for the next decade. Most people won’t need to. But it’s a nice door to have open.
