Could your daily hot drink habit cover the cost of an EV?
If you’re keen to get a real sense of how affordable an EV is for you, comparing the cost against little, everyday expenses is a useful trick.
And, given that Brits consume around 98 million cups of coffee each day, where better to start than with your daily hot drinks fix (don’t worry, tea drinkers, we have you covered too).
Unless you have a serious caffeine habit, you won’t be able to cover an entire EV with the money you spend on coffee. That said, you might be surprised at the percentage of a monthly lease payment your daily cuppa, caramel latte, or mocha frappuccino could cover.
So you can see how the costs stack up, we’ve done the maths for you. Spoiler alert: it might be more affordable than you think!
Here’s how we’ve worked things out:
- Our figures are based on one hot drink a day, five days a week
- We’ve used the fantastic value Peugeot e-2008 as the basis for our EV lease, at £329 per month
The car: The Peugeot e-2008
Tea drinkers: 12% of a Peugeot e-2008
What an economical lot you are, tea drinkers.
No bleary-eyed coffee queues for you in the morning, thank you very much. Just straight into work, kettle on, teabag in, and your preferred amount of milk poured into your mug.
If you haven’t opted out of the hot drinks run because “work gives us teabags for free”, your splash-out herbal infusion likely costs around £2 per go – so £10 per week, or £40 per month.
That’s 12% of your Peugeot monthly lease payment – a surprising amount given that we’re at the cheapest end of the hot drinks scale.
Black coffee fiends: 21% of a Peugeot e-2008
Are you:
- A chic French mademoiselle in a 60s arthouse movie?
- An overstretched employee juggling a huge workload, a demanding boss, and tight deadlines?
If so, you might take your coffee black, perhaps with the smallest dash of milk – either gazing artistically out the window of a charming Parisian café, or in a reusable travel mug on the delayed 07:38 from Woking.
A humble Americano costs around £3.50. That’s £17.50 across a week, or £70 per month.
That means that your no-frills morning coffee works out at over a fifth (21%) of your Peugeot 2008 leasing payment per month.
Foamed milk fans: 24% of a Peugeot e-2008
Need something that feels sophisticated and cosy in equal measure?
Enter the flat white. Or, the latte. Or, the cappuccino – whichever ratio of caffeine to steamed, velvety milk you prefer (yet insist is somehow different and better than the others).
At around £4 per go, these provide a comforting source of midweek luxury that also works as a useful afternoon pick-me-up. If you’re buying one a day, you can expect to pay £20 across the week, or £80 per month.
This works out at a shade under a quarter (24%) of your Peugeot leasing payment each month.
Custom order queue decelerators: 34% of a Peugeot e-2008
Here’s to you, extra-venti-double-shot-caramel-syrup-whipped-cream people. Long may you inspire us with your individuality and relentless, don’t-give-a-damn pursuit of the things that make you truly happy.
Also, long may you use the coffee chain’s mobile app to order in advance, rather than holding up the queue with your whimsical creations. The rest of us are grumpy, boring, and have places to be.
Prices for these types of coffee vary. We’ve used Caffè Nero’s Iced Caramelised Pistachio Latte (£5.45) as an example, though other brands are available.
Based on this figure, a week’s worth of coffees cost £27.25, or £109 per month. That’s a staggering 33% of your Peugeot lease payment.
You can make a third of your monthly car payment with your coffee habit – and for your commitment to out-there custom caffeinated drinks, we salute you.
So…I should give up my daily coffee to get an electric car?
Absolutely not. It’s the little things in life that keep us sane, after all.
Here’s what we’re getting at. The amount you spend on your daily hot drink is money that you probably don’t even think about spending. Also, we haven’t even included the other savings you can make with an EV, such as savings on charging costs (90% of people with home charging will save money on EV charging costs), maintenance, and more.
If you can afford to treat yourself, an EV could be much more within reach than you think – especially if you opt for a package which offers handy discounts on home and public charging, home energy and more, like Intelligent EV.
