FAQs Telemetry Data

Got questions about how we use telemetry data? You're in the right place.

Volteras Technologies Limited specialise in electric vehicle software. Their mission is to organise and leverage data to accelerate the transition to a greener and smarter future.

We’ve partnered with Volteras to get hold of consistent data from across different manufacturers of cars, to allow us to have a better understanding of the health of all our vehicles.

We won’t share any personally identifiable information with Volteras, they will only see data relating to the vehicle. This includes, but isn’t limited to, mileage, state of charge, battery health, fault codes, and service due dates.

We access telemetry data via Volteras from our fleet of vehicles. The information we can receive varies according to what is available from each vehicle manufacturer.

Data is collected securely through our vehicles' built-in sensors and systems, and transmitted via encrypted channels to ensure your privacy and security. This is done through our approved third party partner, Volteras, and means that there is no personally identifiable data included in our collection methods. We outline this in our privacy policy, under 'Information we receive from third parties'.

We extract data directly from our vehicles and it can vary according to what’s available from each car manufacturer. The information helps us to understand vehicle health, optimise performance and, in time, offer proactive maintenance to minimise the time each vehicle is off the road.

Data available includes but is not limited to:

  • Location (with a date/timestamp): so we can identify when one of our vehicles has either entered a garage, and/or in the event one reported theft, and/or to assist in tracking delivery progress, and/or to assist in collection/recovery of the vehicle after a lease is ended.
  • Vehicle details: brake fluid, brake status, mileage, mileage until next service due, service required due date and status, maintenance state, tyre pressure, and
  • Battery information to monitor battery health: voltage, capacity, charging speed/status, state of charge, range, temperature.

As of February 2025, cars from the following brands have telemetry capability: Tesla, Mini, Volvo, Kia, Hyundai, Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda, Cupra, BMW, Mercedes, Alfa Romeo, Citroen, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Peugeot, Vauxhall, Ford. This list will continue to grow and may not be fully comprehensive after 04/02/25. We’ll let you know when this capability is actually turned on for your vehicle.

Our aim is to be able to access data for all vehicles leased through Octopus EV. We’re able to connect to a majority of vehicle manufacturers today but not all. The EU Data Act is set to become applicable on September 12th, 2025 and this includes manufacturers of connected products having the necessary data sharing infrastructure in place.

Yes, we have access to charging cycles and speed of charging. This helps us to understand how to extend the life of vehicle batteries and support you in keeping the performance of your car high.

The tech Volteras uses is as efficient as possible. It only ‘wakes up’ your car when it needs to, for example when it starts charging.

We're working on ways to provide proactive support and work to minimise time where vehicles may be off the road. But as a driver, you still have a responsibility to report any issues with the vehicle you're driving.

We understand you may have concerns about data collection. To reassure you, we’re committed to using any information we collect responsibly and transparently. As such, this isn’t something you can opt out of and our customer service team will be happy to support you in feeling comfortable with the data we collect and what it means for you.

The data we’re accessing relates to the vehicles which we own, so we can keep the vehicle and our drivers as safe as possible. Data points include, but aren’t limited to, vehicle details like mileage, service due dates and tyre pressures as well as battery health. Volteras data is recorded at a vehicle level, meaning they are never able to identify you as an individual.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch. We're here to help.

No, the telematics and connected services in your vehicle are built-in features designed to ensure the best possible driving experience, safety, and vehicle performance. Since they're an integral part of the car's systems, they can’t be switched off without impacting essential functions.

Our privacy policy has referred to our use of telemetry data since 2022. In January 2025, it was updated to reflect the scope and regularity of what we can receive, which is explained in this FAQ page.

The changes we made include more information about the data we can now receive from car manufacturers, specifically about the status and health of our vehicles. It describes the data points we receive, why we receive them, and a more regular cadence of receiving them, to ensure transparency about telemetry data.

No, we can access the necessary data directly to support you and keep your vehicle running smoothly.

Yes, here’s how.

  • Download the App: Start by downloading the vehicle manufacturer's official app from your smartphone's app store.
  • Log In: Sign in using your connected services credentials. If you haven't set this up yet, the app will guide you through a simple registration process.
  • Explore Your Data: Once logged in, you'll have access to the information provided by the vehicle manufacturer, which can vary across manufacturers. The app is designed to give you a comprehensive view of your vehicle's performance and help you make the most of its features.

Please note, if you choose to use an app, we'd recommend reading the vehicle manufacturer's privacy policy.

No, we don’t receive or report individual driving behaviour (e.g. speed, acceleration, braking) to any authorities or third parties.

We can't provide a specific timeframe as it depends on a number of factors (for example; when it was stolen, when we were informed, how quickly the manufacturer communicates with us). If you report that a vehicle has been stolen to us, we’d ask you to report it to the police and we’d confirm with you that we can access the live location with the help of the vehicle manufacturer. We’d then provide location details to the police to support with their investigations.

The telemetry system in your vehicle is part of the built-in connected services designed to enhance your driving experience. If there is ever a fault with the connection, the data would not be received from the vehicle to the manufacturer.

The data will remain with us as its relates to the health of the vehicle. If you decide to buy the car at the end of lease, we can share a battery health certificate. Just get in touch to request this.

You can install a dash cam, but you’re not able to install a telematics device into our vehicles. Please bear in mind that some devices can have a drain on the battery and would need to be removed with no damage before returning at end of lease.

We share vehicle information with employers, who have leased the vehicle, on the vehicle state. Examples include MOT status and odometer (mileage) readings to ensure compliance and road worthiness, as well as end of lease arrangements such as calculating final mileage costs.

Volteras provide vehicle data in a way that will allow to streamline our reporting processes to a leaseholder. In future this may include live data on vehicle status, but not location.

We don’t. The telemetry data is of the vehicle's performance and health, not on individual drivers. If multiple people use the vehicle, the data reflects overall usage. We don’t receive personally identifiable information.

No, but the telemetry data we receive as a result may prompt us to get in touch. For example if a vehicle has exceeded its annual mileage limit, we may reach out to discuss options for revising your contract.
