Why your midlife ‘crisis’ should be electric

Unpopular opinion: getting a new car, a fancy bike, or picking up a new hobby in your late 40s is not a midlife crisis. That’s a term we should reserve for those who abandon their comfortable jobs for a new age cult, or tragically attempt to impress the office work experience youths with ‘fluency’ in Gen Alpha slang.
A person of a certain age upgrading their method of transport, starting a health kick (that iron-distance triathlon is calling), or getting really into home brewing isn’t a crisis at all – in fact, it’s a midlife celebration. You lacked money, time, or space in your 20s and 30s. Now, you have the stability to treat yourself and live out those ambitions you’ve had to put aside over the years.
And, if ‘treating yourself’ looks like getting a brand new car, there are a few very good reasons to go electric. Here’s why that midlife celebration will feel so much more exciting with an EV.
1. It’s the most fun you can have on the road
Wake up. School run. Commute. Home. Telly. Bed.
You’ve been stuck in an established routine for a while. Your midlife celebration should be about shaking things up and adding a bit of excitement to your everyday life.
So, why settle for a car that’s just like the ones you’ve always had? Why not push the boat out with an EV that’s fresh, new, and a whole lot of fun to drive?
That near-instant acceleration that an electric motor offers a speed and smoothness that trumps anything petrol or diesel vehicles offer. Many EVs also corner more responsively thanks to something called ‘torque vectoring’. Plus, with most EVs offering high-tech features like regenerative braking or Intelligent Cruise Control, you’re able to drive using mostly one pedal (or in some cases, none at all).
Not only that – they look great too! Just take a look at the classic curves of the Mercedes Benz EQS, the peppy, urban vibe of the BYD Dolphin, or the futuristic silhouette of the CUPRA Tavascan:
EVs are where designers are really pushing things forward – so get ahead of the game and show off the most stylish car on your street before everyone has them.
2. EVs free up more money to enjoy yourself
What would you do with an extra £6,000?
Whether you’d like to live life a little more in midlife, save for retirement, or maybe help the kids out with uni, that’s a nice chunk of money to have at your disposal.
Switching to an EV frees up this money, largely thanks to how much cheaper it is to charge at home than fill a tank with petrol or diesel.
*Based on advertised range of 250 miles
**Based on fuel tank capacity of 44L with average petrol price of £1.34 per litre (April 2025)
EVs lower costs in other areas too, so you can free up a little more for those extra treats (meals out, trips away, that triathlon bike that is definitely necessary for shaving 0.35 seconds off your run-of-the-mill sprint-distance PB).
Here’s where else you’ll save money:
- Maintenance: average annual servicing costs from year one to year three of ownership are 28% cheaper for EVs. EVs are also 31% cheaper on average to service from year three to year five.
- No ULEZ charges: EVs don’t produce tailpipe emissions, so are exempt from the daily charge for driving in Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ) and Clean Air Zones (CAZ). This can be up to £12.50 per day. That includes most major UK cities, such as London, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Bristol. EVs are also exempt from the London Congestion Charge.
- Tax savings: new EVs pay just £10 road tax for their first year, which gives you a saving of £185 on the standard rate (£195).
3. EVs are comfortable and convenient
A quote to live by, regardless of whether or not you caught the latest series of HBO’s small screen blockbuster (of course you’ve seen it – your cultural tastes are relevant, informed, and totally down with the kids).
There comes a point where you don’t want to waste time on things that are inconvenient or don’t work very well. You’ve lost hours to meetings-that-could-have-been-emails, uncomfy chairs, and unexplained train delays. It’s time to reclaim your time.
What you want – no, what you deserve – right now are comfort and convenience. Here’s why an EV fits this bill perfectly:
- Lack of road noise and a tonne of smart driving features make them a far more relaxing choice for longer journeys than petrol and diesel cars.
- There are now more rapid charging points than petrol stations in the UK. Most EVs will charge to full in around 20 minutes or so – the perfect length of time for a loo break, a coffee and a quick stretch of the legs on longer journeys.
- The average real-world range of an EV is around 235 miles. The average distance our drivers cover in a week is 235 miles – so you have more than enough juice for day-to-day activities.
