The top 10 UK cities for EV charging

  • 2 min read

In November 2024, the UK had around 89,000 public charge points. As of summer 2025, there are over 113,000. That’s a massive 21% increase in just a few months.

But where are all these chargers located?

It’s a common misconception that most of this infrastructure is centred around London and the South East….Sure, London has a lot of chargers – but it also has a lot of people! This list of top EV charging cities demonstrates that driving an EV is easier than ever, wherever you live in the UK.

736 chargers

10. Edinburgh

As well as pledging an investment of £50m to transition the city’s fleet vehicles entirely to low-emission vehicles, Edinburgh City Council is the lead council on the South of Scotland Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund project. This initiative has been awarded £6.8m by the Scottish Government to further develop charging infrastructure across the region.

761 chargers

9. Liverpool

Having declared a Climate Emergency in 2019, Liverpool is dedicated to achieving Net Zero by 2030. As well as being awarded £9.6m from the LEVI fund to improve charging access, the City Council has installed 300 on-street EV chargers.

798 chargers

8. Leeds

Leeds City Council’s push towards Net Zero is supported by a number of EV initiatives, including investment from the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund (LEVI) and a recent deal with chargepoint operator Believ to install chargepoints in public car parks and other council-owned sites.

801 chargers

7. Milton Keynes

Following an in-depth consultation period, Milton Keynes is planning a large-scale rollout of both rapid ‘superhub’ charging stations and off-street chargers in residential areas. Things are looking very promising indeed, with MK now boasting the highest number of rapid charging stations per 100,000 residents

898 chargers

6. Nottingham

Nottingham City Council has received £1m from the Levelling Up Fund to improve EV charging infrastructure. There’s already been a push for more charger availability in car parks, park and rides and leisure centres; now, they’re focusing on residential areas to support those without access to off-street parking.

1,011 chargers

5. Manchester

Coming in at a respectable fifth place, Manchester’s EV charging infrastructure is set to get better and better, thanks to large-scale investment and ambitious EV charging policy with a strong emphasis on accessibility and inclusivity.

1,304 chargers

4. Glasgow

Glasgow’s Low Emissions Zone (LEZ) has made EVs an increasingly attractive choice for locals. And, with Glasgow City Region securing up to £3.5m investment from Transport Scotland, there’s set to be over 3,000 additional charge points installed over the next few years.

1,956 chargers

3. Birmingham

It’s another win for the West Midlands, as Birmingham takes third place with 1,956 public EV chargers across the city – an increase of 40% over just six months, driven by Birmingham City Council’s commitment to green transport initiatives and a push for more EV charging in car parks, taxi ranks, and other transport hubs

Birmingham definitely takes the top spot when it comes to charging speed. With a significant amount of investment from rapid charging giants like Osprey and Instavolt, 30% of chargers fall into the rapid or ultra-rapid categories.

2,470 chargeres

2. Coventry

Coventry comes in at second place with an admirable 2,470 chargers, thanks to innovative local government investment and further Clean Air Zone development work.

In fact, Coventry’s per capita EV investment is one of the highest in the UK, showing that you don’t need to be one of the UK’s largest cities to offer great EV infrastructure!

A good portion of investment has focused on improving residential access to EV charging, which we love to see. With initiatives underway to improve access to charging for those without driveways, Coventry could be the most inclusive EV city in the UK right now.

29,000+ chargers

1. London

London comes in at number one, with almost 30,000 charge points (as of mid 2025) – and, thanks to a range of EV schemes and ULEZ encouragement - that number is only set to grow further.

The capital’s EV drivers benefit from extensive public charger coverage across supermarkets and leisure and retail outlets, and significant amounts of green transport funding from both TfL and public-private partnerships.

London borough councils are also broadening access to EV charging with curbside charging schemes – ideal for anyone in the heart of the city who wants to drive greener whilst living in a flat.

Electric driving: simple, accessible, affordable

What the data shows: public charging is accessible right across the UK – and, with many local authorities taking advantage of the LEVI fund to improve charging access, the number of public charge points is set to increase even further!
