How reliable are electric cars?

Short answer: electric cars are reliable. On the latest UK data, modern EVs now match or beat petrol and diesel cars for reliability. If you're thinking about switching but you're nervous about swapping your trusty petrol car for something full of batteries and software, this one's for you.

Switching to an EV is a big call, and reliability is often the thing that makes people pause. You know your current car. You know its quirks, and roughly what it costs to keep on the road. An EV can feel like an unknown. So let's clear it up with real numbers, and look at what actually goes wrong, how long the battery lasts, and which EVs come out on top.

Are EVs more reliable than petrol or diesel cars?

On the latest evidence, yes. Electric cars break down less often, and they're built to last as long as their petrol equivalents.

Start with the simple bit. An electric car has far fewer moving parts than a petrol or diesel one. There's no gearbox, no clutch, no exhaust, no timing belt and no engine oil to change. Fewer parts doing hard work means fewer things that can wear out or fail.

The numbers agree. A major study published in Nature Energy in January 2025 looked at around 300 million UK MOT records. It found that modern electric cars now last about as long as petrol cars from the same era, with an average lifespan of roughly 18 years. EV reliability is improving quickly too, getting better by about 12% with each model year, against 6.7% for petrol and 1.9% for diesel.

Breakdown figures tell the same story. In 2025, the AA reported that electric cars made up under 2% of the breakdowns it attended, even though EVs are more than 5% of cars on UK roads. And when an EV did need help, nearly 9 in 10 call-outs were sorted at the roadside.

Worth being honest here. When EVs do get a call-out, the culprit is usually something small and familiar, like the little 12 volt battery that runs the lights and electronics. It's the same part that strands plenty of petrol cars. The big drive battery is rarely the problem.

What actually goes wrong with an EV?

Not a lot, and rarely anything dramatic. The most common issues are fairly dull: the 12 volt battery, tyres, the occasional software update, and the odd charging niggle.

Tyres are worth a mention. Electric cars are heavy and quick off the mark, so they can wear through tyres a little faster than you might be used to. Good news if you lease, though. Most leases let you add maintenance cover that includes tyre replacement, so it becomes a fixed monthly cost rather than a big surprise bill.

On the plus side, EVs ask for less routine upkeep. No oil changes. Brakes often last longer too, thanks to regenerative braking, which is the clever system that slows the car using the motor and tops the battery back up while it does. Fewer trips to the garage, basically.

How many miles should an EV do before it needs repairs?

This is usually code for one question: how long will the battery last? The reassuring answer is a long time.

A 2025 UK study by battery specialists Generational, which looked at more than 8,000 electric cars and vans, found the average battery was still at 95% of its original health. Even cars aged 8 to 9 years old held onto around 85%. Cars that had covered more than 100,000 miles were typically still sitting at 88 to 95%.

Manufacturers back this up with warranties. Most cover the battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles, and promise it'll stay above about 70% capacity in that time. Real-world health is running comfortably above that promise, and full battery replacements are very rare.

One handy detail from that study: mileage isn't the main thing that ages a battery. How you charge it matters more. For everyday use, try to keep the charge somewhere in the middle rather than sitting at 100% or running it flat, and save rapid charging for longer trips. Do that and the battery should hold its health for years.

What are the most reliable EVs?

Reliability varies by electric car model, so it pays to check before you commit. The What Car? Reliability Survey for 2026, based on nearly 30,000 responses from real owners, is a good place to start.

Its top-scoring electric cars were the BMW i3 (97.4%), BMW i4 (96.8%), Nissan Leaf (96.5%), Hyundai Ioniq 6 (95.7%) and Mini Electric (94.2%). The Nissan Leaf keeps popping up in these lists. 

A separate 2026 study of warranty claims found it had the lowest claim rate of any EV, at just 1.52%. The bigger picture is encouraging. Electric cars as a group scored 90.4% in the What Car? survey, up from 87.7% the year before. Reliability is climbing year on year. 

Are Chinese EVs reliable?

Brands like BYD, JAECOO, OMODA and Xpeng have arrived in the UK fast, and they're winning fans on price and kit. It's a fair question whether they hold up.

The honest bit first. Most of these makers are still fairly new to the UK, so there's less long-term reliability data on them than on the established names. That will build over time.

What we can look at is reassuring. These brands back their cars with long warranties. JAECOO models come with 8 years or 100,000 miles of warranty cover, OMODA offer 7 years or 100,000 miles of cover, and BYD offers a 6 year vehicle warranty plus 8 years on the battery. Car manufacturers tend not to hand out cover like that on cars they expect to fail.

Safety and battery tech stack up too. The JAECOO E5, OMODA E5, BYD Dolphin and Xpeng G6 all hold 5-star Euro NCAP ratings. BYD's Blade battery uses a chemistry that's designed to age slowly. The sensible takeaway: judge the model and its warranty, and don't write a car off just for where it's built.
