The School Run’s Hidden Pollution Problem. And How EVs Can Help.

There are plenty of things to worry about during the school run. Have they remembered their PE kit? Why is there a yoghurt in the bottom of the bag? Where, exactly, did the other shoe go? And why does leaving the house five minutes earlier somehow result in arriving five minutes later?
Air pollution probably doesn't make the list.
But maybe, it should.
Children are exposed to FIVE TIMES higher concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) while travelling to school than while they are at school.
That's according to research from King's College London, which tracked more than 250 primary-school children in London using personal pollution monitors. Exposure was higher on busy roads and lower on quieter routes.
A few minutes in the car or walking alongside a busy road can put children right next to one of the biggest sources of urban air pollution: petrol and diesel traffic.
And for children, whose lungs are still developing, that's something worth paying attention to.
How can EVs make a difference to the school run and children’s health?
We're used to discussing EVs in terms of range, charging speeds and running costs. But there's another difference that's much harder to see in a car’s specification - what an electric car doesn't put into the air.
EVs produce no tailpipe emissions, so they produce zero tailpipe NO₂. An EV waiting outside the school gates isn't releasing exhaust fumes into the air around children. And cleaner air can make a real difference. But don't just take our word for it.
New research looking at the impact of London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) found that children's lung development improved after the introduction of the scheme, with the gap in lung function between children in London and a comparison area narrowing.
The researchers were stunned with their findings and the evidence is increasingly showing that cleaner air can mean better outcomes for children's developing lungs.
The school run happens every day, and one car making one cleaner journey might not sound revolutionary. But multiply that by thousands of cars making the same journey, five days a week, and the potential impact starts to look rather different.
So, where families can't make that journey by walking, cycling or public transport, switching from petrol or diesel to electric can make a meaningful difference: the journey still happens, but the tailpipe pollution doesn't.
How our drivers are already making a difference
Electric cars are a key way to cut carbon emissions, reduce fuel costs, or avoid trips to the petrol station. All of those things matter. But there's also a much more immediate benefit: the air around the car itself.
And our drivers are already part of that change.
We now have more than 50,000 EV drivers in our community, and collectively, they travel around 400 million miles every year (averaging around 8k miles a year).
That's 400 million miles being driven without tailpipe NO₂ - the equivalent of driving around the Earth more than 16,000 times, without a combustion engine producing exhaust along the way.
Those include everyday journeys: school runs, commutes, trips to the shops, visits to family and everything in between. The cars are getting people where they need to go, but without the exhaust emissions that come from burning petrol or diesel.
And perhaps that's what makes the shift to electric so interesting. It's not just about what's happening under the bonnet; it's about what happens around the car, too.
Because the school run is unlikely to get any less chaotic. There will still be missing PE kits, forgotten lunchboxes, and someone insisting they definitely told you about the school trip.
But there's no reason the air around the school gates can't get cleaner.
